Designated bus pick up and drop off stops

September 9, 2009

In May of this year, the annual bus ridership agreement form was sent home to parents. The form for the 2009-2010 school year asked parents to let us know if their child would need a bus seat to and from school. For those that were planning to ride a district bus, we asked parents to specify an everyday, Monday through Friday location- a consistent stop for students.

As superintendent, I am responsible to assign each child riding a bus a specific bus stop, per the Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules from the Ohio Revised Code (3301-83-13). With the form sent home in May, I am still designating a specific bus stop for each child, but sought parent input where that everyday stop would be.

At the same time, my designation of bus stops has not meshed with prior plans for before or after school child care and some parents have found themselves with inconsistent bus stop requests, wanting their child to get on or off at different stops on different days. Those requests are not being approved as it conflicts with a specific bus stop.

To be consistent between the bus ridership form and our student handbooks, the Board of Education approved a revised description of acceptable bus notes. Going forward from this date, all student handbooks will read, “Students will be picked up and dropped off at the same bus stop every school day. Students, due to an unusual circumstance (defined as extraordinary, atypical, uncommon, and/or infrequent) whom need to ride a bus other than their assigned bus, must have written permission from the transportation barn five days in advance. For student safety, these requests MUST be submitted in writing.”

Sincerely,
Mike Johnsen, Superintendent

Attached is the updated version of bus ridership form for the 2009-2010 school year. The intent is to promote student safety by adhering to our transportation procedures and to eliminate the need to save a seat for the same child on 2 or 3 different busses.

Parents need to identify one consistent pick up and one consistent drop off spot, therein reinforcing that last minute phone calls changing how kids go home will not be accepted as it does not promote student safety, as our transportation procedure dictates.

It also should eliminate the need to daily identify the 25-30 kids that are going home some alternate way . . . a change in how a child goes home by bus will require advance notice, again, what is already in transportation procedures.

We will continue to accommodate emergency situations, but those should be infrequent. We will also accommodate sleepovers, parties, etc. but 5 day advance notice is required to ensure that there are sufficient seats on the requested bus.

Mr. Michael Johnsen,
Superintendent
